What Will I Learn
Throughout the course you are taught techniques and methods as and when required; as your needs may differ from others, this may involve a degree of one-to-one teaching with certain materials. The new syllabus requires the GCSE Art student to have their own workbooks/sketchbooks into which you will collate both day to day classwork and homework. You will also be expected to make at least one visit to a gallery for research purposes. This research into contextual studies (background history of the subject), will also be part of your workbook material. After the first basic unit is completed the course should depend on your own aptitude. Available materials should include most two and three dimensional processes which are only limited by available space and materials.
How Will I Be Assessed
Paper I The new GCSE Art and Design full course specifications must contain at least two units of coursework. These units together equal 60% of the marks for your GCSE grade. A work journal is required. Paper II Your final examination question is set by the examination board. This also requires a work journal. You will be given four weeks preparation time and ten hours to complete a test piece. (40% of your marks). You are expected to use your preparation time to plan and research, practise observation, experiment with different medias and look at the ways other Artists have approached the same question. Searching for visual and other sources of information associated with the question will give you confidence in your own ability to face a final test to show just how good you are! All of your two years work will be assessed alongside the final test piece with preparatory studies, later to be moderated which determines what GCSE grade is to be awarded.
